| Abstract | The Simple Biosphere 2 Model Map is one of eight maps in the Global Land Cover Characteristics (GLCC) database. The GLCC database was generated by the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) National Center for Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS), the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. GLCC was derived from the National Oceanic and Space Administration (NOAA) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data collected daily over a 12-month period from April 1992 through March 1993. It is made available through USGS EROS Data Center. Map data was converted for use in TerraViva!® global data-viewing software by ISCIENCES, L.L.C., Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. Simple Bioshpere 2 Model Map illustrates the distribution of earth surface materials or "land cover" over the entire globe. |
| Supplemental Information | See the metadata record for "Global Land Cover Characteristics (USGS EROS) for a downloadable file that contains the entire collection of eight GLCC maps at 2 arc minute and 5 arc minute resolution. The 30 arc second maps are available at www.terraviva.net. System Requirement: To use the downloadable data file (*.xtvm) you must have TerraViva!® Global Data Viewer or TerraViva!® Global Data Analyst software installed. A free copy of TerraViva!® Global Data Viewer is available at www.terraviva.net. For more information about this map see TerraViva!® Map Guide in "Distribution Info>Data for Download" below. |
| Purpose | The GLCC database was an international project undertaken by a number of organizations under the auspices of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) and NASA. The US Geological Survey EROS Data Center performed the technical task of creating the land cover map by interpreting space remote sensing data. GLCC was developed at the request of scientists interested in the study of global environmental change. These scientists believed that existing maps of land cover were inadequate to represent current conditions, and they sought an improved, updated map in order to properly model effects of climate change and other global environmental processes. |
