Abstract
(See also: National Political Boundaries 2008.) The Sub-National Political Boundaries map identifies nearly 3000 unique sub-national administrative entities. In most cases sub-national boundaries are 1st-level administrative units (states and provinces). The Sub-National Political Boundaries map is derived from many sources, rigorously researched in order to use best available sources for each country. All boundaries are derived from open sources or from copyrighted sources in a manner to protect respective interests. Sources include World Factbook 2006 (CIA) and United Nations Second Administrative Level Boundaries (SALB) project (ongoing).
Supplemental Information
Raster maps are currently available; vector data will be available soon. System requirement: To use the data files (*.xtvm) you must have TerraViva!® Global Data Viewer or TerraViva!® Global Data Analyst software installed. A free copy of TerraViva!® Global Data Viewer is available at www.terraviva.net. Data is accessible through a free software upgrade. Once TerraViva! software is installed, you'll be prompted to accept the upgrade the next time you run the program. Raster data: A 30 arc second map (approximate scale 1:3,500,000) is available through the automatic software upgrade. Additional maps at 1 arc second (approximate scale 1:120,000) and 3 arc seconds (approximate scale 1:350,000) are available upon request to: info@terraviva.net. Vector data: Files at 1 arc second, 3 arc seconds, and 30 arc seconds will be available soon. For more information about this data see TerraViva!® Map Guide in "Distribution Info>Data for Download." See also the companion map National Political Boundaries 2008.
Purpose
The purpose of this map is to provide accurate and current sub-national geo-political boundaries. It is difficult to obtain accurate information for many countries. A detailed search of various sources including web sites, academic experts, consulates and others enabled improvement of a number of regions. While this process is ongoing, sources consulted to date are detailed in the TerraViva!® Map Guide (see "Distribution Info>Data for Download" below).
